I think its more the difference between incremental innovation and disruptive innovation. Its a very tricky thing to innovate, and iteration can still result in solid products... Apple's Ipod is a great innovation that has been iterated over time with revision coming with each generation! Apple instituted a strong cultural bias away from adopting reactionary tactics when it comes to products and services. Besides not bringing a "piece of junk" to the market, Apple wants to find a way to dominate a particular market space, by defining the user experience in that space. While it couldn't do that for the mass market PC, it has done so successfully in other markets. So look for a "netbook" that redefines user experience in untethered computing/communications. I have a netbook with a nice keyboard (and agree not all netbooks have one). It runs Ubuntu and I'm very pleased with it (and with the fact that I can have a much bigger screen than an iPhone and type much more comfortably on it, not to mention no monthly telephone fees).
